Getting Started 6

The Prepper Disk is a self-contained offline knowledge device designed for emergency preparedness, off-grid living, and remote travel.

It's built for preppers, homesteaders, outdoor professionals, and anyone who values self-reliance.

Nope! The Prepper Disk works like a local hotspot, it creates a small, private wi-fi signal that you connect directly to in order to browse the websites it contains.

Never. Your device is yours to use forever, no fees and no subscriptions needed.

When you buy a Prepper Disk it includes a a web console that lets you get new versions of content (like Wikipedia, iFixit, our exclusive Prepper Disk tools, etc.) whenever they are available, for free.

Separately, once a year, we usually release brand new content and features which sometimes carry a cost (we may pay to license a new book, a database like Repeaterbook, or licensed video series).

If you would like access to these brand new features and content, or prefer the ease of use of just swapping a card instead of managing downloads, you may purchase a fresh SD card and simply swap out the old one. You can reuse your old card for anything you might need an SD card for.

Read on for full details :

1) Our SD card Path (with full support) is available as an annual update via a fresh SD card. After purchase, we mail you a new card and you can swap out the one in your device. These updates include not only content updates but new features, and updates to all our exclusive content as well. Subscribe to our newsletter (below) or send us an email at support@prepperdisk.com to get on our notification when update cards are available.

2) For our more moderately tech-savvy users, you can use the one of our consoles to update.

Most freely available content is updated via the out-of-the-box IIAB admin panel to pull updates for most resources (Wikipedia, maps, and other Kiwix content).

While we encourage users who are comfortable to do so, because of the variables this introduces to your device (choices in content, capacity, etc.) we cannot offer detailed technical support for this path. There are, however, many online resources that can help as well as folks in the IIAB community.

The Prepper Disk Exclusive content (Repeater Book, Web Tools, National Park Map, etc.) are updated via a separate console accessed via the Getting Started Guide. You can see how to do so here.

If you are interested in this path, email us at support@prepperdisk.com with your serial # and we will provide custom instructions for your device.

Note : Currently all devices have the latest available Wikipedia update, though a new one is planned by Kiwix for "Spring".

Setup takes about two minutes.

  1. Plug the device into the included power adapter or a USB-C battery
  2. Wait 60 seconds for the device to boot
  3. Using the phone, tablet, or computer you wish to view content with, connect to the "PrepperDisk" wifi network
  4. Scan the QR code using that device, or open a browser and navigate to http://10.10.10.10

Yes! Using the included web console, you can download content in your language.

Not all content is available in all languages but (for example) Wikipedia is available in dozens of languages including : Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Spanish, French, Arabic, Bengali, Portuguese, Russian, Urdu, Indonesian, German, Japanese, Nigerian Pidgin, Marathi, Telugu, Turkish, Tamil, Yue Chinese, and Vietnamese.

Technical 3

Prepper Disk provides searchable, browsable versions of some of the Internet's most vital websites. You interact with it just like the "normal" Internet. It isn't a hard drive, it is a web server pre-loaded with popular sites.

Unlike a hard drive, you can :

Connect multiple devices simultaneously to the device - up to 20 with our premium unit
Browse, search, bookmark, and navigate these sites like you normally would on the Internet
Connect from any tablet, phone, computer etc. with no special drivers or cables needed. Your device connects to the private wifi network the Prepper Disk creates.

Absolutely, we recommend it.

Any MicroSD imaging utility will allow you to make a backup and store the image or make a backup SD card.

On Windows, we recommend Win32DiskImager. On Mac we recommend ApplePiBaker v2.

The Prepper Disk works with virtually any modern device that has a web browser — phones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers.
